In a world where the cost of living is soaring, and financial security feels increasingly out of reach, who has the luxury to "go green"? This panel will explore one of the most provocative and contentious debates of our time: how can people be expected to invest in sustainable technologies when economic pressures are higher than ever? We’ll tackle the question head-on: Is it even fair to ask consumers and businesses to bear the burden of upfront costs for solar panels, electric vehicles, and energy-efficient appliances in the name of sustainability? Or is there a path to a future where going green doesn’t have to mean financial sacrifice? The "green premium" – the cost of choosing climate-friendly options over cheaper, conventional choices – has long been a barrier. Yet, with advancements in technology, this premium is eroding, giving way to what some are calling a "green profit." What was once a financial strain may now be a means to long-term savings and even a competitive advantage. We’ll discuss game-changing examples like Patagonia, a company leading with purpose without sacrificing profit, and question if other companies can (or should) follow suit. Can they offer affordable, sustainable products without cutting corners on quality or hitting their bottom line? And what about those who can’t afford the green premium in the short term—are they left out of the sustainable future altogether? As we unpack these critical questions, our panel will consider whether businesses can truly balance affordability, quality, and sustainability, while also examining emerging innovations that promise to unlock green profits and deliver value. We’ll explore whether sharing renewable energy from rooftop solar through EV chargers, or innovative green financing, can shift the balance. Join us as we dive into the nuances of making sustainability work not only for the wealthy few but for everyone. We need a just energy transition where no one is left behind.
